beats,kick,snare,pattern,fill-in,crash!

this post i will talk about an important position in a music group. they are drummers. yeah drummers, the percussive sound, the one who lead the tempo and of course the one who brings the "mood" what ever the mood is, the drummer is a very important role in a playing with mood music.

i was, and still a part time drummer myself, and i would say not a good one, and still learning. i am the drummer in a bandung based indie pop band called jodi in the morning glory parade, and honestly i was stuck in such patterns, to be so called "indie pop" drums. not much to explore experience i had in here. but i try and try to put different patterns to each songs we had. well, i will try harder. and curently learning how to play disco/or dance beats.

there are many bands in this world, and of course drummers too, but it's hard to find a unique drummer, or a strong character. many of which became my favorite drummer with different styles and here they are below:

Jon Theodore

he was a drummer of the mars volta, personally i more like his drumming than thomas pridgen which has more complicated patterns. jon theodore is more "simple" yet smart patterns, i thought he has more "groove" on it. and one of my favorite song with his works on drums is "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt-The Mars Volta"

Matt Tong

popularly known as the drummer of bloc party. he is my favourite drummer actually, because in my ears his beats is a mixture of dance beats, and the power of punk. i like the way and the sounds of his fill-in. it sounds very unique and very ear catching. i recommend all of his drumming in "silent alarm" album by bloc party
and my personal favorite of the drum works is "like eating glass"

michael james

drummer of explosions in the sky maybe he's not that popular or an under rated drummer, but i think he deserved great credits to be the one who control the mood to accompany the beautiful melodies made by the other three members, with such a glorious fills he made, he can bring you really high, and then get you down violently.
i may recommend tracks from the album "those who tell the truth shall die". it has powerful drumming in the album.

Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen

the drummer of a danish band mew,we all know that this band is unique in every way maybe the tempo variation in some of mew songs is not his idea, but the way he did the patterns, transition, and fill ins, are practically genius. you may want to check out from their very first album a triumph of man, to the latest like no more stories, they have their own unique beats in each album. we may have a note for the song "introducing palace players" with a "math rock" style.that make us enjoy it with a tingling confusing beats :D

Greg Saunier

drummer of an art rock group called "deerhoof". he is wild. he is crazy. and he is really a great drummer. he has a unique drum settings bass, snare, and a cymbal which he can use as a hi hat, a ride, and a crash cymbal. he plays the drums expressively, along with all of unique songs that deerhoof has. listen to friends opportunity album offend maggie, milkman, and all of their stuffs are worth listen.

now the local ones (from indonesia)

Bemby Gusti

i was once know this person as a drummer, in a band called "LAIN". he shows his enjoyments to play the drums with his big hands comes great beats. his current band sore, which has many various styles from, jazz swing,to rock. shows off his skills and his techniques. you can listen to his clever drums on "come by sanjurou" by Sore. but you better watch his live performance. and i don't really know, i keep staring at his drum playing.

Hertri Nur Pamungkas

i first fell in love to his drum playing when i see him as a drummer of a pop act band called "whisperdesire". i could say, that i can compare bloc party's matt tong. his dynamic playing, and smart fill-in he made for whisperdesire are ear catching too. try to listen too track hope and wish by whisperdesire really emotional feel on this track. currently he is an additional player for the trees and the wild, santamonica and sketsa. if you see his live performance, you may see how his hands are dancing and flowing while he play the drums. enjoy his drum playing calmly

Ildo Reynardian

well, what can i say about my friend, and of course one of my favorite drummer. he was once in a Youth Creative Pop group called RAN. and for academic reason he had to go to germany for about half year. i like his drum playing since he was in the band. he is a soulful, and technically good, he likes to explore and really wanted every song he plays has different sound. and somehow i couldn't explain what it is, but there is somewhat a character the way he play the drums. like the previous drummers you will see how much he enjoy to play the drum. you can listen to "nothing last forever" By RAN. or you can listen to one of of my band song "Fireworks"by L'alphalpha, you'll know why i love the drum sounds. Currently he is a member of L'alphalpha, and Monday Math Class. and has been a super substitute drum for The Trees and The Wild.

well.. they are my personal favorite drummers. hope we can make a good beats and good music like them :)
